Hello,

We would like to invite you to take part in a study being conducted in collaboration with a team of researchers from France. The purpose of the study is to examine practices related to naps and nighttime sleep in children aged 3 to 6 years.

To participate, you must be:

  • An educator working with children aged 3 to 6, be fluent in French or English, and be employed in a daycare center or school in Quebec.
  • A parent, a resident of Quebec, fluent in written French or English and have a child aged between 3 and 6 who attends a daycare centre or kindergarten.

You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire lasting approximately 30 minutes. Some questions may seem repetitive, or you may be reluctant to give certain information. If you do not want to answer certain questions, you may skip to the next.

For the educators, the questions concern your work environment, the sleep of the children in your care, your practices and beliefs, and your sleep.

For the parents, the questions concern your child's sleep, behaviour, health, well-being and needs. Other questions focus on your practices, your beliefs, your psychological well-being and your sleep. Finally, some questions relate to your family environment and the characteristics of your family. We will be asking you again by e-mail in February and May to complete questionnaires to measure changes in your child's sleep. These questionnaires will last around 15 minutes the second and third time around. In order to link your 3 questionnaires together, we will ask you to give us the first 3 letters of your child's first and last name, to which we will add a numerical code. This will make it impossible to trace your identity or that of your child. The e-mail address you provide will only be used to contact you directly in February and May. It will then be permanently destroyed.

All data from this study will be treated as confidential. Only the Quebec research team and the Quebec research assistants working on the project will have access to the data. The confidentiality of the information is ensured in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable in the province of Quebec and the regulations and policies of the Université du Québec en Outaouais (notably, in very rare cases of abuse, fraud, or computer maintenance, your research data could be consulted by authorized UQO personnel, in accordance with the Règlement relatif à l'utilisation des ressources informatiques et des télécommunications de l'UQO).

Submitting your answers to the questionnaires means that you agree to participate in this research project. By agreeing to participate in this study, you do not waive any of your rights or release the researchers or institutions involved from their legal and professional obligations. You are also free to stop the study at any time, without prejudice. Additionally, if you wish to withdraw the data you have already submitted, you may contact us by e-mail at coordo.sommeil@uqtr.ca within 12 months of the end of the project.

Your participation in this study will contribute to a better understanding of napping practices among young children in Quebec. There is no risk in participating in this study. The results will be used for scientific purposes in doctoral theses or essays, scientific articles and conference papers. The data will be stored on password-protected computers for 25 years and may be used for secondary analyses in future research projects on children's sleep under the supervision of the same research team. The data will then be permanently destroyed.

If you have any questions or concerns about the project, you can contact the research team at the email address coordo.sommeil@uqtr.ca.

If you have any questions or concerns about ethical aspects of the project, you can contact the president of the ethics committee of the Université du Québec en Outaouais, André Durivage, at 819-595-3900 ext. 1781.
